When America Stood With Friends Against Tyrants
There was a time when America stood with our friends against tyrants. We believed in liberty for all. Our identity was inextricably linked to the vision of America as a beacon of freedom. Today, we remember.
For twenty years, I have told the stories of the heroes of WWIIβinterviewing hundreds of veterans, the vast majority of whom are no longer with us. Each face is a precious memory to me. Each conversation, a reminder of a legacy that must never be forgotten.
One of the highlights of my career was filming an episodic series in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Iwo Jima (Japan), England, the USA, and elsewhere with legendary football coach Bobby Bowden. He was my friend and a complete pleasure to direct. Everywhere I traveled with Coach Bowdenβeven on foreign shoresβhe was greeted with enthusiasm and love. He was a special man who loved his God and his country. He also deeply respected the men of WWII and often reflected on how their stories and the strategies of their generals influenced his own approach as one of the most winning coaches in college football history.
Over two years of filming, we returned to the beaches and battlefields of WWII with the men who had fought there in their youth. I recreated dances, battles, and liberation paradesβfeaturing the children and grandchildren of the very people who had once been liberatedβand used authentic WWII equipment to bring history to life.
Sadly, Coach Bowden passed away before we completed production. The show is now being reimagined in a shorter format for streaming.
Above is our sizzle reel for the series. Take a moment. Watch. Enjoy. Remember.
With gratitude for the men and women of an era when America stood with friends against tyrants, I remain
